Epithalon — The Telomere Peptide

Background
Epithalon (also Epitalon, Epithalone) is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. It is the synthetic analogue of Epithalamin, a polypeptide complex isolated from the bovine pineal gland by Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology in the 1980s.
What is proven (largely in Russian literature)
Russian-language and select English-language studies in mice, rats, and Drosophila report increased mean lifespan, restored melatonin rhythms, reduced incidence of spontaneous tumours, and improved age-related immune parameters.
In-vitro work shows telomerase reactivation in normal human somatic cells (fibroblasts) treated with Epithalon, leading to telomere lengthening across passages in culture.
What is NOT proven
No large Western randomised controlled trials of Epithalon exist. Independent replication outside the Khavinson group of the lifespan-extension and tumour-incidence data is limited.
Human telomere lengthening, biological-age reversal, or any clinical anti-ageing outcome from injected Epithalon is not supported by Western regulatory-grade trial data.
Open research questions
Whether the in-vitro telomerase reactivation translates to humans in vivo. Whether long-term telomerase upregulation carries oncological risk (a long-standing concern in telomere biology). Pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution in humans.
Regulatory status
Not approved by the FDA, MHRA, or EMA. Used in some Russian gerontology clinics on an off-label basis.
